Cade

The palace was far bigger than it looked from the outside. And the ceilings were lower. I needed to get the heck out of there. I’d been holding it together rather well when I was with Marigold. She was beyond a good distraction. She was a good everything, and despite the complication that came with that, I didn’t mind at all.

“Ahem, Mr. Daly. Are you even listening?” Nanee pulled my attention from thoughts of Marigold.

“Oh. Sorry. Please. What did you say?” We’d just turned down another hallway. I had a great sense of direction—but not down here for one reason or another. I was blaming it on being underwater.

“I was asking you if you understand the serious nature of your situation.” Nanee gave me a look that was equal parts annoyed and bored. Considering she was the one making me follow her, it seemed misplaced.

“Of course I understand.” Being questioned about your involvement in the kidnapping of a royal figure was never a good thing. Not that I’d experienced it before. “But I hope you also understand the serious nature of keeping me here against my will, particularly now that your king is gone.”

“Missing. He is not gone.”

“He is out of the house. Does that work?”

“Mr. Daly.” She stopped short.

“Cade. Just call me Cade. If you are going to keep me prisoner, I’d prefer if you didn’t refer to me in a formal way.” That made absolutely no sense, but it had sounded good in my head.

“You are not a prisoner. We are offering you an opportunity of a lifetime.”

The only opportunity of a lifetime this world could offer me was a lifetime of taking Marigold to bed. And that wasn’t coming from the king or his minions. “I have my own kingdom to run. I made my preferences known, yet no one is working toward getting me out of here safely.”

“The king thought it prudent that you take time before coming to a decision.”

“And by coming to a decision, that means taking a position I don’t want.” I started down the hall again even though I wasn’t sure where we were going. I was too antsy to stand still. “Or am I missing something?”

“We need you.” Nanee put a hand on my arm. Her touch felt cold, like ice cold on my bare skin. “Do you understand that?”

“Why?” I tried to hide my relief when she moved her hand. “You have Marigold. She appears more than willing to take the position. And she cares. She’d make a wonderful queen.” I didn’t really know about her leadership qualities, but as a king, I liked to think I had special insight on who would be right for the role.

“That she would. But there are other purposes for a ruler. Sometimes relationships must be forged.”

“And surely she could have forged those relationships far better than I could.” It’s not that I relished picturing Marigold settling down with some random royal for the sake of an alliance, but if that’s what it would take to rule her kingdom, I was pretty sure she’d do it.
